Playtime with new artists is just beginning!

19th October 2022

Fun, joy and creativity is not what everyone gets to experience on a Monday morning when they are at work but as a Dance Artist I have the absolute privilege of often spending time in a swirl of ribbons, colour and creative smiles! Monday 10th October was no exception as 8 Dance Artists gathered with Vicky of Commotion Dance, and myself for ‘Playtime’.

There is a very good reason ‘Playtime’ was created.  Doodle and Commotion have joined forces because we believe Play is a right of childhood and we are wanting to do all we can in protecting this right.

Protecting this right is not an easy task, and sadly it is not play but instead a lot of hard work! Why is this threatened? Why should something that is fundamental to the developing body and brain of a child, something that is a child’s natural way of understanding the world be at threat.

Some answers lay in the observations of teachers feeling more and more pressure to strip back opportunities of play and instead feel the pressure for carpet and desk based work. The pandemic reduced opportunities to meet up and the children who are now at school missed out on those interaction of play meaning they are still playing side by side rather than full immersing together in collaborative play.

However a shining light in this is the same teachers feeling these pressures are reaching out and wanting to have creative dance, arts and play in their schools.

Playtime was the start of a bigger plan. Doodle and Commotion have decided to join forces and we want more and more artists to join us on this mission, sharing approaches and learning from each other.

Now moving forward emails are being exchanged and dates are being put into the diary to develop a further dialogue around interest in Doodles plans. I am hoping that coffee chats will lead to more exchange and artists can come on board in different ways to grow the work, and the motivation and action further in this mission of protecting play. Doodle and Commotion are regularly meeting to keep evolving the PLAN and are interested in Dance Artist, Educators and Organisations who too wish to protect childhood and in particular a childs right of PLAY and CREATIVITY
